Best alarm apps for every kind of sleeper, compared

Picks by sleeper type, from the free built-in Clock app to mission alarms and a wake-up buddy. We make Alarm Mate, and we don't rank it first.

Illustration of an iPhone with a ringing alarm, surrounded by seven round icons labelled Just ring, Louder, Task, Workout, Android, Buddy and Gentle.

Key takeaways

  • If you wake to sound, the free iPhone Clock app is enough: silent mode and Do Not Disturb don't affect it.
  • If you switch alarms off half-asleep, you need an app that asks for a task first, like Alarmy.
  • PushClock makes the alarm a workout, but it needs a subscription to use at all.
  • On Android, Sleep as Android pairs sleep tracking with CAPTCHA tasks and a snooze limit.
  • Alarm Mate (ours) has no snooze and can wake you with a buddy. Every mission is free, but it's iPhone only, iOS 26+.

  13. What we left out, and why

The best alarm app depends on how you sleep. For many people the free Clock app is enough. Heavy sleepers need a task or sheer volume, and people who drift back to sleep need someone waiting. We make Alarm Mate, an iOS alarm app built around a wake-up buddy, and we don’t rank it first.

“Best alarm app” lists usually crown one app and then spend 2,000 words agreeing with themselves. That doesn’t help. The person who sleeps through a fire drill and the person who wakes at a pin drop need completely different things, so this list is organised by the problem you actually have.

Quick picks

Find your row, then jump to that app’s card.

How we picked

For each kind of sleeper we asked:

  • Does it ring when it should? On iPhone, that means through silent mode and Focus.
  • What ends it? A tap, a task, or a person.
  • Is there a snooze, and can you limit it?
  • What does it cost, and what’s behind the paywall?
  • Which phones does it run on?

Then we picked the app whose strengths fit that problem, and listed its drawbacks next to it. If a listing didn’t tell us something, like exactly which missions are free, we left it as unknown rather than guess.

“I just need it to ring”: the iPhone Clock app

If you wake up when an alarm goes off and your only problem is making sure it goes off, you already own the right app.

  • Already on your phone, free
  • Can wake you at a consistent time with a sleep schedule

Watch out for

  • No tasks, so it’s easy to switch off half-asleep
Read Apple’s alarm guide

Apple’s own guide says “Do Not Disturb, the Ring/Silent switch, and Silent mode don’t affect the alarm sound” (Apple Support). It has no tasks, though, so if your half-asleep hand is faster than your brain, it will lose.

“It didn’t go off” usually has a boring cause: the volume slider, a sound set to None, Attention Aware lowering the volume when you look at the screen. We go through all of them in iPhone alarm not going off?

“I sleep through loud alarms”: Loud Alarm Clock

Some people don’t need a puzzle. They need a noise that registers, and Loud Alarm Clock by j labs is built for that.

Good at

  • “Volume-boosted audio files”
  • A random sound each morning “so you can’t get used to it”
  • A time after which you can’t snooze any more

Watch out for

  • Snooze is still there until that cut-off time
  • iOS version last updated 15 February 2025, before AlarmKit
View on the App Store

It describes itself as the “loudest alarm clock on the store” (its own claim), and its listing claims “OVER 3M DOWNLOADS!!!” (the developer’s number, not an independent one). The snooze cut-off is a feature I like a lot.

iOS 26 introduced AlarmKit, the system that lets third-party alarms ring through silent mode like the Clock app, and this app’s last iOS update came before it. Before relying on it, run the three-minute check with your phone on silent.

“I turn it off in my sleep”: Alarmy

If you’ve ever found your alarm switched off with no memory of doing it, you need an alarm that asks something of you first. Alarmy is the default here, for good reasons.

Watch out for

  • Premium tier; Reddit users report paying $7.49 to $7.99 a month
  • Some find the missions lose their bite
View on the App Store

It’s been around since 2016, and its listing claims “75M Users” (Alarmy’s own number). The premium tier comes with a 7-day free trial, according to the listing; we haven’t confirmed current prices.

The fatigue complaint sounds like this:

“u just autopilot through them and suddenly the whole point is gone”

If price is the sticking point, we look at the options in Alarmy alternatives.

“I want the workout to be the alarm”: PushClock

If you’ve always meant to exercise in the morning and never do, PushClock makes the alarm the workout.

  • Rings again if you silence it, plus a Wake-up Check later

Watch out for

  • “PushClock requires an active subscription.” No free way to use it
View on the App Store

You can stack several missions on one alarm, and the listing says the alarm “rings again seconds later” if you silence or swipe it. The Wake-up Check rings again a few minutes after your mission, and there’s optional app blocking until you’re done.

If you want exercise missions without a subscription, several apps on this page (ours included) have push-up and squat missions for free.

“I want no snooze at all, ever”: Alarm Mate

Ours, so the same caveat applies. Most mission alarms still leave you a way to negotiate: a snooze allowance, a volume slider, a force-quit. Alarm Mate doesn’t.

  • Volume can’t be turned down while it rings
  • Every mission is free

Watch out for

  • iPhone only, iOS 26 or later, English only
  • No snooze on bad days either, on purpose

While the app is open, the volume jumps straight back up if you lower it. Force-quit it and it asks you to come back (“Hey, come back!”), and a ringing alarm keeps going until you open the app.

The only way to stop it is to finish your mission, from Push-Ups to Math Problems. The full breakdown is in the alarm you can’t snooze or turn down.

“I’m on Android”: Sleep as Android

If you’re on Android, Sleep as Android has been doing this since 2010 and it shows.

“I want someone waking up with me”: Alarm Mate

This is our app, so weigh this section accordingly. If the one thing that ever reliably got you up was knowing someone was expecting you, that’s what Alarm Mate is for.

  • You see each other live in a lobby
  • Friends can wake with you or pick your mission

Watch out for

  • iPhone only, iOS 26 or later, English only
  • Match needs an account; after 3 free matches, credits or Premium

You pick a wake-up time and your missions, and Match pairs you one-on-one with someone whose alarm goes off at the exact same minute. When it rings, you both land in a lobby and see each other live: still asleep, just opened the app, doing push-ups.

The alarm has no snooze and doesn’t stop until you finish one of your missions, and every mission is free. You can also bring your own people: invite a friend to wake at the same time, or send a link that lets them choose your mission, no app needed on their side. The mechanics are in the alarm you can’t snooze or turn down.

Premium is $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year, with no free trial.

“I want a gentle start, and I’m keeping snooze”: Awake

Not everyone wants to be shouted out of bed, and the research on snoozing is kinder than its reputation (we cover it in how to stop snoozing). Awake by unorderly is the calmer option on this list.

Its real pitch is the briefing: tasks come from the Structured app, and an integration with one sec keeps you off social media. It keeps “adjustable snooze settings”. We didn’t subscribe to find out what’s free.

Everything about other apps is as their listings described it on 26 September 2026. Prices and features change often; the listing is the source of truth.

Check any alarm app in three minutes

Before you trust an alarm app with a flight, give it three minutes on a quiet afternoon:

  1. Install it and allow whatever it asks for, especially alarm access.
  2. Turn silent mode on, set an alarm two minutes ahead, lock the phone and put it down.
  3. When it rings, note three things: did it ring at full volume, is there a snooze button, and what did it take to stop it?
  4. Screenshot the price screen, so you know what you’d be paying before day 8 of a trial.

What we left out, and why

  • More mission apps like Wake Boom, Wayk, Erly and ByeBed. They’re good at similar things, and the main difference between them is what’s behind the paywall, so they’re in Alarmy alternatives.
  • More social apps like Snooze Squad and Focusmate, which are in accountability partner apps for mornings.
  • Sleep trackers for iPhone, such as Sleep Cycle, which other lists include. We didn’t check its listing for this page, so we’d rather leave it out than describe it from memory. If you want tracking and tasks together on Android, Sleep as Android above does both.
  • A stress test. What happens when you leave each alarm ringing, press its buttons and force-quit it gets its own page: alarm apps for heavy sleepers.

If you land on the “no snooze at all” or “someone waking up with me” pick, Alarm Mate is on the App Store. If you land anywhere else, the pick for your row is a better start than we are.
